Girl on Fire

On March 23rd, the world will finally be watching the premiere of the epic saga, The Hunger Games, based on the best-selling novel by Suzanne Collins. The film, set in a futuristic North America, tells the story of Katniss Everdeen, a teenage girl from a poor mining district, and her struggle to be the sole survivor in the Hunger Games, a contest in which teens are pitted against each other for televised entertainment.

I know I cannot wait to see the fashion in the film, which ranges from demure vintage in the poor districts, to crazy, Gaga-esque ensembles in the capitol. In the opening ceremony of the games, Katniss rocks a stunning cape that is engulfed in flames.

Rising star, Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss in the film took her character’s nickname, “girl on fire,” to heart in her latest red carpet looks. Here are some of my favorites…

Here, Jennifer Lawrence dazzles us in Jimmy Choo heels and a Prabal Gurung gown at the Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games. The fiery, gold lame gown was a perfect tribute to her character. All-over gold may be too much for the college student, so work some gold into your wardrobe with bold gold metallic heels or a clutch.

Here she is wearing a red hot Calvin Klein gown at the Academy Awards where she was nominated for best actress for her role in Winter’s Bone. The gown is perfectly form fitting, yet simple, which doesn’t take away from the attention-grabbing hue. We can take some helpful style advice from Jennifer: when wearing red, keep your hair and makeup simple and wear minimal accessories.

Lawrence was pretty in pink in a stunning Oscar De La Renta gown at the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Awards. I love the bold contrast of her bright gown with black accessories.  For a more wearable take, add a pop of neon to your spring wardrobe by pairing a skinny, neon belt with neutral basics.

Lawrence was stylish and sophisticated in Tom Ford at the Paris premiere. Although the dress is simple in black, she stays true to her Katniss sense of style with the gold details on the back and gold heels.

ImageHere she goes for a flirtier look at the Berlin premiere, in a bold Marchesa gown that mimics the movement of flames.

Meet this artist – Lana Del Rey

When a smoldering singer released her singles “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans,” on YouTube this past summer, the world was mesmerized. Many wondered what the story was behind this artist who appeared to have stepped out of an old-Hollywood film. Love her or hate her, the star has since then tiptoed her way to the top of the charts with her newest album, “Born to Die,” reaching the No. 1 spot on iTunes in 14 different countries.

The artist, who refers to herself as a “Gangsta Nancy Sinatra,” mixes sixties-style pop ballads with modern, catchy lyrics for a music style that has earned her a cult following.  In her hit single, “Video Games,” she enchants us with an ethereal and melancholy love song about her video game-loving boyfriend, complete with harps and bells. Del Rey’s talent resides in the fact that she is able to take an everyday subject and make it beautiful and glamorous. In an interview with Daily Mail UK, she describes her newest album backed by Interscope Records as “an homage to true love and a tribute to living life on the wild side.” In each track, she breathily tells us tales of days in the life of her bad-girl alter ego.

This buzzed about artist is most well-known for her sexpot sense of style, complete with bee-stung lips, hair à la film star, Veronica Lake, and flawless retro ensembles. She has achieved a recognizable identity in the music world and has become a fashion icon in her own right. I know I am inspired by her retro-glamour style and I can’t wait to wear cat-eyed eyeliner this weekend.

Breaking the Symmetry

I don’t know if it’s the above average temperatures in Chapel Hill or the rapidly approaching New York Fashion Week that is making me excited for spring trends, but I’ve been anticipating the upcoming season by scoping out fashion websites for must-have spring pieces.

One of my favorite trends for the upcoming spring season is asymmetrical, solid-colored skirts and dresses. I’m talking maxi skirts with an edge. This look is the perfect combination of sexy and subtle. It’s conservative, yet reveals just enough leg to keep you guessing. Whether chiffon, cotton, or some other material, let’s face it—they’re fun, flirty, and perfect for the spring. Check out Miranda Kerr in this pastel pink Eva Brazzi dress. She looks gorgeous.

You can find this modern-age Cinderella look on websites like and Here are a few:

Anthropologie Skirt $138

Preen Skirt $462

Kevork Kiledjian Skirt $750

Blue Life Skirt $108 dress- currently not sold in the U.S.

The beauty of these skirts and dresses is that they are statement pieces. You really don’t have to do much else to make these outfits look good. In fact, for an awesome day look I would suggest pairing your asymmetrically-cut skirt with a simple top—a basic cotton tee will do! If you’re looking to dress this look up for a night on the town, try pairing it with a chunky, bright-colored necklace and some sexy heels. I’m telling you—it’s so easy! These pieces are sure to make you stand out in the crowd.

Golden Globes 2012 Fashion Scorecard

I’m sure that most of you tuned in to the Golden Globe Awards 2012 on Sunday night…and if not, you caught all the recaps on Twitter! I have to say I think this was one of the best years for fashion at the Globes. I think everybody looking stunning!…or…most everybody. Here are my picks for best and worst dressed on the red carpet:

Emma Stone—Emma absolutely rocks this Lanvin dress and Cartier clutch. For me, she tops the list. The eggplant and red colors in her dress perfectly accentuate Emma’s red hair. The plunging neckline is sexy yet sophisticated. The studded belt gives the whimsical fabric of the gown a modern touch. Overall, I think she looks like a Greek goddess. Perfection!

Reese Witherspoon—Reese looks gorgeous in this red Zac Posen gown while still maintaining her down-to-earth, girl-next-door look. I think red is a great color for her. It gives her a “wow” factor that draws the viewer’s attention to the beauty of the dress and eliminates the need for statement jewelry pieces or dramatic makeup. And who doesn’t spend countless hours trying to replicate her “just-out-of-bed” blonde waves? Reese is a 10.

Sofia Vergara—Ok, let’s be honest…who doesn’t love her? She’s beautiful, funny, talented, and not to mention my personal favorite character on the hit show Modern Family. Sofia has got it all going for her. But how about on the red carpet? I’d say yes. She knows how to accentuate her curves, and this Vera Wang dress does it perfectly. I have to say, I think her hair looks a little flat. A few loose waves might have complimented the texture of the dress. But, she’s still on my hot list. Way to go, Sofia!

Claire Danes—This black-and-white J. Mendel gown looks stunning on Claire. She looks classic and elegant. This Homeland star and winner for best actress in a television drama is on the way to the top.

Angelina Jolie—I know this selection might be controversial. People StyleWatch and other fashion blogs picked Angie to be on their “Best Dressed” lists. I have to disagree. I think the contrast between the red and the cream is too harsh. It makes her look like a comic book character…maybe a vampire? I also have a personal issue with cream-colored silk. I think it’s difficult to work with and often looks cheap and somewhat prom-y. I hate to bash on Angelina because normally I consider her a style icon. But for the Golden Globes, I think she fell short.

Nicole Richie—Not a fan of this Julien Macdonald dress. For me it seems cheap and makes her look older than she actually is. I also think she looks like one of the Real Housewives of New York. She could have done so much better to highlight her awesome bod! Maybe next time, Nicole.

Kelly Osbourne—Although I love Zac Posen, this dress is not right for Kelly. The shape is too harsh. It makes her look like a warrior in battle gear. Kelly has come so far in rebuilding her image. I think she would have done better in something a little more classic.

That’s the score for the Golden Globes 2012. Can’t wait to see our celebs at the next award show!

Celebrity Street Style: These Boots Are Made for Walking

With cold weather swiftly approaching (this past Halloween weekend was not the time for skimpy costumes), we are all looking for ways to battle the chill while staying on trend.  Here, I give you the lace-up ankle boot. Whether high-heeled, leather, suede, military-inspired or shearling-lined, this shoe is a must have this season. With this variety of styles, you can’t go wrong. I cannot get enough of this fall trend.

From Chanel to Proenza Schouler, lace-up ankle boots dominated the fall collections at New York Fashion Week. They are chic with an edge, a wearable take on hiking boots. They work perfectly with fall’s menswear styles and can be dressed up or down.

We can learn a lot from these lovely ladies. Rihanna takes a fall basic, a chunky sweater, and transforms it into an outfit perfect for a night out with friends by adding a fitted black skirt, opaque tights and her tough ankle boots. Rachel keeps things casual, yet put together by pairing her boots with boyfriend jeans and a polished blazer–a perfect outfit for class. Leighton wears her stiletto ankle boots with a statement dress to add a bit of edge. Maybe you’ll work ankle boots at your next cocktail.

So, go ahead. Pair these booties with a boho dress and patterned tights, chunky socks and wool shorts, or your favorite pair of skinny jeans and a slouchy sweater for a cozy, chic fall look.

Here are some of my favorites. Enjoy!

Closets You Can’t Help But Covet

The racks of clothes, shoes and bags in the closet of The Devil Wears Prada is enough to make any fashionista drool, and when Anne Hathaway’s character brings home new clothes and shoes every day, we begin to wonder: what does a fashion editor’s closet really look like? Thanks to a new website launched by stylist Stephanie Mark and clothing designer Erin Kleinberg, we now have an inside look. (not to be confused with offers a peek into the closets of some of the top magazine market editors, buyers, fashion publicists, and designers. Photographer Jake Rosenberg goes behind the scenes and artistically captures the pieces that collectively make a fabulous collection worth coveting.

The fashion icons provide commentary on each piece – why they love it, where it came from, the significance it has on their daily fashion decisions, or even what inspired them to purchase the item. From the images of Jane Keltner De Valle’s impressive shoe display to Mary Kate Steinmiller’s collection of mini skirts, every photo captures the essence of style and luxury that comprises every closet.  As the Dries Van Noten quote on the website states, “It’s more interesting to have just a picture of a small detail – then you can dream all the rest around it. Because when you see the whole thing, what is there to imagine?”  The showcased items captivate and enthrall the viewing audience while also manifesting the icon’s personal style. With eight closets added in the past week, this site will definitely become the fashionista’s new obsession!
