The Perfect Fall Accessory

Temperatures have cooled considerably in the past few weeks—days that once fluctuated between hot and cool have now descended into slightly warm and cold. With the newly settled chill of fall, keeping warm is imperative. However, walking in and out of rooms of varying temperature, waking up to a cold morning but encountering a warmer afternoon, and changes in wind all affect our levels of warmth during the day. So layering becomes key during the fall, and the perfect fall layer is also an extremely fashionable accessory: the scarf. When deciding to wear a scarf, make the conscious choice not to simply throw any plain cloth around your neck. Pick out scarves with particular patterns, textures, and styles that make an outfit truly stand out, and experiment with different ways of tying a scarf to mix up your looks throughout the week. Below are 10 fun, interesting, and chic scarves to try out this fall.

To start off this list is the most classic of all scarves: the Hermès silk scarf. The French luxury brand is renowned for its sophisticated scarves that epitomize taste. This particular Casques et Plumets scarf mixes bright colors into delightful images.

This Kilim scarf, worn as a headdress here, is also classic Hermès. Try to emulate this style by wearing your hair down and wrapping a silk scarf across the top of your head. This slightly offbeat style is not only a standout, but it can also keep the front of your head warm!

With Hermès scarves comes a hefty price, however, so for scarves in a lower budget range, try out Madewell. The new collection of Madewell storyteller scarves mirrors the sophistication of Hermès scarves without the same price tag. This black and white storyteller scarf from Madewell has a beautiful graphic pattern that could potentially be worn with many different outfits.

I love this cable cowl neck scarf from Brooks Brothers—it fits the All-American style of the brand but offers a unique blend of textures (lambswool and silk). This infinity style scarf is a popular one for this fall, so why not put your own spin on the style with a mixed texture scarf.

This Michael Kors toggle neck warmer scarf is on this list for two reasons. First, the color is absolutely gorgeous and appropriate for fall. Second, the toggle clasp sets this scarf apart from others, adding an interesting design element that gives this scarf a laid-back but chic feel.

Oblong scarves are also extremely popular for Fall 2012. This Eyeful Embroidered scarf has such a great blend of neutral colors with pops of pink and orange. The pattern is interesting, and the fullness of the scarf allows for all different kinds of scarf tying.

For a sleeker look, try this Nicole Miller optical gradation silk scarf. This look is definitely unique and noteworthy for its tricky patterning.

This Alexander McQueen tulip skull scarf works so well for this time of year, especially on a slightly warmer but still cool fall day. The playful pattern of skull and flowers creates a striking look.

For much chillier days, try out this greyscale fringed loop scarf from Anthropologie. This particular scarf incorporates the fringe trend and will help you stay warm between classes.

Finally, this Spratters & Jayne Infinity Chain Scarf will also keep you toasty throughout the day. Designer Rachael Warner uses ultra-chunky Peruvian Highlands wool to create her fashionable scarves.

Meet this artist – Lana Del Rey

When a smoldering singer released her singles “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans,” on YouTube this past summer, the world was mesmerized. Many wondered what the story was behind this artist who appeared to have stepped out of an old-Hollywood film. Love her or hate her, the star has since then tiptoed her way to the top of the charts with her newest album, “Born to Die,” reaching the No. 1 spot on iTunes in 14 different countries.

The artist, who refers to herself as a “Gangsta Nancy Sinatra,” mixes sixties-style pop ballads with modern, catchy lyrics for a music style that has earned her a cult following.  In her hit single, “Video Games,” she enchants us with an ethereal and melancholy love song about her video game-loving boyfriend, complete with harps and bells. Del Rey’s talent resides in the fact that she is able to take an everyday subject and make it beautiful and glamorous. In an interview with Daily Mail UK, she describes her newest album backed by Interscope Records as “an homage to true love and a tribute to living life on the wild side.” In each track, she breathily tells us tales of days in the life of her bad-girl alter ego.

This buzzed about artist is most well-known for her sexpot sense of style, complete with bee-stung lips, hair à la film star, Veronica Lake, and flawless retro ensembles. She has achieved a recognizable identity in the music world and has become a fashion icon in her own right. I know I am inspired by her retro-glamour style and I can’t wait to wear cat-eyed eyeliner this weekend.

My latest obsession…the classic oxford button down shirt. Let it be white, pastel, striped or solid, this versatile piece never goes out of style. Maybe your mom made you buy it, or maybe it reminds you of dreaded interviews past… but the oxford is actually a great piece. It is conservative yet sexy. So pull out your old oxford or borrow one from your man because you are about to discover new ways to wear this classic piece!

Oxfords seem a bit too hot to wear in the summertime? Why not pair them with your bikini? Old oxfords can be great cover-ups. The simplicity of the cotton fabric contrasted with a wild bathing suit could be just what you need. Pair with a floppy hat and big sunglasses for a perfect summer look.

The Little White T-Shirt

Okay so this week we are going back to the basics. This week’s staple piece is probably the most simple and often the most boring article of clothing that hangs in our closets. The little white t-shirt. Whether it’s a crew or v-neck, loose or form-fitting… we all have one. This piece is usually only dragged out as a last resort. The thing we wear under a cute new cardigan or with that skirt that just doesn’t seem to match anything else. But watch out… the little white t-shirt is back and its better than ever before.

To add interest to this blank canvas of an outfit we will need some basic pieces (yay you get to wear more of you favorite classics!) and some interesting accessories.

First way to vamp up your little white tee… Pair your shirt with a printed Pashmina or scarf. Add jeans, flats and earthy earrings for a cute and casual vibe.

Need something a little more dressy? Wear your white tee with a blazer and a statement necklace. Pair with cute leather riding boots or a classic pump depending on the occasion.

Now its time to mix things up a bit! Why not take your little white tee out for a night on the town? Just add a unique skirt, black tights, pumps and a cool necklace. Want an even edgier look? Replace the simple black pumps with some ankle boots.

These are just a few ways to wear your little white tee. Be creative. The possibilities are endless. So next time you are looking for something to wear, pull out your little white tee…you may be surprised with all the fun new ways you can wear this piece. And remember there are ALWAYS new ways to wear your classics!

Love Always,

Alexia

The Start of Something New…

Do you have old and tired clothes that are just hanging in your closet? Do you have “staple” pieces that are just screaming for your attention? We all have them, these classic, never-go-out-of style pieces that we are told we must own in order to make our wardrobe complete. But what happens when our old favorites are just getting plain old?

My name is Alexia Conley, and I am a freshman here at Carolina. I am currently hoping to be a business major with a minor in journalism. I LOVE clothes. Let me just say that again so we are clear. I LOVE CLOTHES.  I adore the feeling of wearing something you feel good in. Wearing the right outfit can give you an ease and confidence that only comes from complete faith in your appearance.

Keeping up with the latest fashion trends can make your closet happy, but it may not always be budget friendly. I will be the first one to tell you that I like a good deal. This is probably the reason why I tend to gravitate towards staple classic pieces, where my purchases can always be justified. But I often find myself getting tired of wearing the same items over and over again. So, in an effort to revive my tired wardrobe and help you with yours, I am starting this series of blog entries. Each week I am going to take a simple classic piece and put a new and modern twist on it.  Get ready for an easy style update using all the clothes you already have.

As Carrie Bradshaw of Sex and the City once said, “ I like my money right where I can see it… hanging in my closet.” So go ahead, buy those investment pieces because you never know when an instant style update is right around the corner!

Love always,

Alexia
