Breaking the Symmetry

I don’t know if it’s the above average temperatures in Chapel Hill or the rapidly approaching New York Fashion Week that is making me excited for spring trends, but I’ve been anticipating the upcoming season by scoping out fashion websites for must-have spring pieces.

One of my favorite trends for the upcoming spring season is asymmetrical, solid-colored skirts and dresses. I’m talking maxi skirts with an edge. This look is the perfect combination of sexy and subtle. It’s conservative, yet reveals just enough leg to keep you guessing. Whether chiffon, cotton, or some other material, let’s face it—they’re fun, flirty, and perfect for the spring. Check out Miranda Kerr in this pastel pink Eva Brazzi dress. She looks gorgeous.

You can find this modern-age Cinderella look on websites like Anthropologie.com and Shopbop.com. Here are a few:

Anthropologie Skirt $138

Preen Skirt $462 Shopbop.com

Kevork Kiledjian Skirt $750 Shopbop.com

Blue Life Skirt $108 Shopbop.com

Topshop.com dress- currently not sold in the U.S.

The beauty of these skirts and dresses is that they are statement pieces. You really don’t have to do much else to make these outfits look good. In fact, for an awesome day look I would suggest pairing your asymmetrically-cut skirt with a simple top—a basic cotton tee will do! If you’re looking to dress this look up for a night on the town, try pairing it with a chunky, bright-colored necklace and some sexy heels. I’m telling you—it’s so easy! These pieces are sure to make you stand out in the crowd.

It is official: Jason Wu’s collection for Target will hit stores on February 5. The collection features the tagline “mischief is in the details” and embodies Wu’s signature style—clean lines, smart details and bright colors. The best part about this designer collaboration? Each piece in the collection ranges from $19.99 to $59.99 for clothing and $19.99 to $49.99 for accessories. What a bargain!

Target has released a new teaser for the collection featuring none other than an adorable black cat named Milu. See the commercial below:

Also, check out the massive billboard in NYC’s TriBeCa with Milu as the star. It’s simple and cute; I love it!

After looking over the entire collection on Fashionista.com (found here http://fashionista.com/2012/01/finally-jason-wu-for-target-the-complete-collection/) I definitely give it an A+. I love the simple and classic lines of the dresses. These pieces will be staples in consumers’ closets for years to come. They are perfectly suited for the target customer—practical yet chic, and definitely affordable! Here are my favorites: Will I see you at Target on the opening day?

If you’re still searching for the perfect pair of summer shorts, these belted twill shorts from 7 For All Mankind may be for you. Hint: If you love this style but don’t want your wallet to take so much of a blow, I spotted very similar pairs in black and a darker tan at Target that were calling my name!

cute swimsuits for this summer & 4.99 bikinis!

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the price for several basic bikinis on Forever 21’s web site: $4.99 each for tops and bottoms! They have halter tops and basic bottoms in royal blue, and string bikini tops and bottoms in royal blue, a light coral and basic black. While these aren’t the most detailed bikinis you could wear, they’re classic styles for a great price!

Forever 21’s Floral Paradise bikini is another cute option. It’s brightly patterned, and although it’s not as cheap as the bikinis above, it’s still a deal at $10.80 for the top and $9.80 for the bottom. The top is even reversible, in case you want to tone down the pattern a bit or de-emphasize a larger chest by wearing a solid pattern on top.

If you have a regular to small chest, a bandeau swimsuit is a cute option for your body. I absolutely love the Purple Multicolor Bandeau swimsuit from Victoria’s Secret! It’s bright, bold, patterned and perfect for the beach. The back closure is adjustable and it comes with a removable halter strap in case you want a little more support or security, since bandeau tops can sometimes slide. Top, $29; bottom, &20.

Another great bandeau option is Target’s Mossimo Polka Dot Twist Bandeau separates. The suit has a retro feel and is available in black, purple, brown and teal, all with cute white polka dots. The top has a removable halter strap, and the bottom has mock ties on the sides, so that you get the cute ties without the danger of the knots coming undone! Top, $17.99; bottom, $17.99.

Fact: We love Urban Outfitters.

Lark & Wolff by Steven Alan Striped Tieback Dress, $59, urbanoutfitters.com

Fact: We love famous designers.

Fact: We can now experience both of these loves at once.

Sure, we love the variety of collections and brands that Urban Outfitters offers its customers. But how awesome would it be if, say, Alexa Chung designed her own collection for the retailer? While we’re still working on that connection, Urban now offers us something almost as good: the new Designed By collection. The collection includes pieces by well-known designers, like Kova & T, Steven Alan, and Ulla Johnson, as well as designers you might not have heard of yet, like Sunshine & Shadow and Chris Habana.

classic kicks covered in iconic prints

Everyone has a pair of Converses floating around in the back of their closet. With spring just within our reach, it’s the perfect time to check out the new collaboration between Converse and iconic Finnish brand, Marimekko. You are probably familiar with Marimekko’s bright, funky fabrics, which come in the form of everything from slouchy, shoulder purses to tablecloths to tunics. The Unikko fabric from the 1960s is the brand’s most recognized.

The kicks come in four different fabrics, with an assortment of fun colors. The fabric is from original patterns from the 1960s. They’re available in the All Star in hi-top or lo-top form, as well as in the Jack Purcell Helen style. Prices range from $75 to $85 a pair. My favorite is the Jack Purcells in the white and red print.

Check out this video, which features a designer from Marimekko’s thoughts and some awesome footage of Helsinki, Finland, where Marimekko is based. Get your pair of these scrumptious, feminine shoes and welcome spring with open arms.
