In the Bag: Coach x Net-a-Porter

The 5 Revived Coach bags to be released, photo courtesy of Refinery29.com

Here at Kaleidoscope, we love collaborations – remember our Lanvin for H&M feature in the Winter 2010 issue? We’ve seen a lot of great collaborations this season – the return of Target’s Go! International collection, Urban Outfitters’ “Designed By” collection, Converse and Marimekko, and Sophie Theallet for Nine West, just to name a few. And while these big-name combinations have been great assets to the fashion world (and to our closets!), our next collaboration preview is possibly the most exciting yet.

Renowned bag label Coach has announced that on June 15th, 2011, they will release a vintage line of purses exclusive to Net-a-Porter. With classic, solid leather colors and once-signature snap enclosures, the bags are easily recognizable as Coach products. It isn’t a new design with a 70’s-inspired feel, but a relaunch of five of their most popular bags to date. They’re also a great mix of sizes – whether you want a smaller handbag or a shoulder bag to bring to work, they’ve got you covered.

The designs weigh in at around $298 – an investment, for sure, but an affordable one, if you can budget and save up until the release. Sure, you might be able to find a vintage Coach bag at a consignment store or a thrift shop for a fraction of that price, but wouldn’t it be nice to take your pick of the design and color you really want? And you won’t have to worry about where it’s been, since you’ll be the first owner. And the leather really will last longer than a lesser-priced bag will – Coach always produces high-quality products.

June 15th. Net-a-Porter. We’ll be there – will you?

Key Accessories for Spring/Summer 2011

Spring is almost here, and it’s time to start thinking about which accessories to pair up with your sundresses, floaty tops and swimsuits! This year’s accessories are much lighter and brighter than those heavy, metallic grommets and studs of the past. Some of the top looks of the season include:

Stripes

Stripes are fresh, crisp and modern, and the ASOS Small Ticking Stripe Satchel, featuring a long cross-body shoulder strap, is just the right addition to a nautical look, whether it be at the beach or just walking around campus. $26.90

Woven

Braided, knitted and woven pieces are must-haves for spring and summer. They’ll help you create a natural, clean, well-traveled look, as if you just returned home from a tropical vacation. New York & Company’s Ribbon Flower Fedora, at $19.95, and J.Crew’s Web Buckle Belt, at $39.50, are two ways to bring this trend into your wardrobe.

Where the Wild Things Are: Animal Hats

As the temperature drops in Chapel Hill, a jungle of hats have sprung — literally. From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the beloved sock monkey, animal hats are a student’s way of fighting the cold with character.

To incorporate an animal hat into your jacket ensemble without looking too juvenile, wear the hat with a solid matching scarf and gloves to keep the rest of your look tame. (P.S. Looking for an animal hat on Franklin Street? Look up at Lightyears. You’ll find them hanging out on the ceiling.)

Quick Picks:

1) Cooperative Woodland Earflap Hat
$34, Urban Outfitters

2) Delux Sock Money Face Wool Pilot Animal Cap
$32.99, Amazon.com

Bright Done Right: Dance Marathon Recruitment

UNC Dance Marathon recruiters took to the Pit and Polk Place this week. Photo courtesy: UNCDM

Love them or hate them, dance marathon recruiters took over campus this week in their bright, wacky ensembles. While their fashion was purposely extreme to attract your eye,  there is one style do that you can take from their purpose don’ts: a little brightness can go a long way.

Incorporate a colored accessory to an otherwise neutral-colored outfit (blacks, whites, tans), and you’ll pop with a coordinated ensemble that like our friendly recruiters’, catches quite a few eyes too.

Quick Picks:

1) Corked Color Necklace
$43.99, Modcloth

2) Crayon Ring
$12, Fred Flare

3) The Sash
$8, American Apparel

Winter makes way for the chance to accessorize with tights, scarves, hats, and oh, yea…GLOVES. No longer just for Michael Jackson or Audrey Hepburn, gloves are back this season in a big, big way. My favorites are the new convertible cuff gloves. The new style is fashion meets function as they are the ultimate layering item for fall. Grab yours before they’re gone!
